A frequent cause of accidents is the release of hazardous energy while an employee is carrying out maintenance or service work despite the fact that there is a legal obligation to shutdown and lock all sources of energy.

The implementation of a sound LOTO procedure prevents accidents. ATG has carried out a number of successful LOTO projects.

A complete LOTO project consists of the following activities:

• Making an inventory of the manufacturing equipment that can present a hazard during the above-mentioned work

• Determining which forms of energy are (potentially) present

• Determining which devices are needed to guarantee a safe environment during maintenance and service

• Writing LOTO procedures

• Working out the different LOTO work instructions

• Delivering the required LOTO devices

• Teaching employees how to follow LOTO work instructions and use LOTO devices
